ALLOWING THE MUSE TO FIND YOU

How often have you said, ‘today I’ll sit down and write a poem/story/article about…’?  And then drawn a huge, great blank!

One of the aspects of creative writing is that it is just that: creative.  And the creative process cannot be forced, cajoled or beaten into submission.  Imagine your goal is to write an article on ‘migrating geese’ and yet you cannot get ‘biscuits’ out of your mind.  So maybe it’s about letting go of the goal and running with the biscuits angle.  As Oliver Burkeman says in his ‘Antidote to Happiness’, we can get over-anxious about and over-focussed on goals.  Holding out for inspiration on the geese might see you sitting stock-still, fingers poised at your computer.  Blasting out some words on the subject of biscuits may mean embracing uncertainty but it could also lead somewhere and ultimately liberate your creativity in time to get the geese article written before they’ve all headed south!
